Crystal Engineering

We have a powerful range of techniques available to optimise the properties of your API:

Salt Selection
Drug candidates that can form salts provide an excellent opportunity to engineer the properties of APIs.  Impurity profiles, solubility, crystallizing, hygroscopicity and manufacturability can all often be improved by optimal salt selection.

Optmisation of Crystallinity
Poor crystallinity of an API is a common challenge in drug development, often leading to hygroscopicity, poor handling properties, insufficient drug substance purity and chemical instability.

If there is a crystalline form for your API, we are best placed to find it.

Generation of Amorphous API
For APIs whose crystalline forms have poor properties, a useful approach is to generate a non-crystalline product.  Amorphous materials are generally much more soluble than crystalline counterparts, and can often be formulated to be physically and chemically stable throughout the required shelf life of a drug product.

Cocrystal Formation

Another powerful technique is to combine APIs in cocrystals with pharmaceutically acceptable guest molecules.  Cocrystals are unique crystalline structures made from stoichiometric component mixes. They provide a unique way to alter properties - giving new, stable and patentable solid forms.
